A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.

While perhaps not at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.

“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”

The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A New Life

Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.

“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.

“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”

Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
