During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
