The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

Price's death comes shortly after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
