In a significant career move, the former England youth boss has stepped down from the Young Lionesses national team to be appointed head coach for National Womenâs Soccer League expansion side Bay FC.
Coates succeeds Albertin Montoya, who guided the San Jose-based club during its first two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya stated in September his intention to depart at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC finish second-bottom in the 14-team standings.
âI have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the FA,â commented Coates. âIt has helped shape me both on and off the pitch. I am now prepared and eager to push myself in a different setting.â
Since taking charge in 2023, Coates oversaw the England U23s through matches including a narrow win over Norway in the European U23 League and a 4-2 friendly defeat to the United States. Accompanying her to America is her England assistant, Gemma Davies, a ex- Aston Villa manager in the WSL.
The club's chief executive, a former FA womenâs technical director, highlighted Coates's abilities: âCoates is an superb manager, but she also has a strong record of nurturing talent to compete at the highest levels.â
âShe is an outstanding leader of squads and building ethos and has the strategic outlook we were looking for,â the CEO stated.
The club had a mixed start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and suffering a postseason defeat in its inaugural campaign before facing difficulties to a 13th-place finish in 2025.
The Football Association's new technical lead, Gavin Step, bid farewell to the departing duo: âWe thank Emma and Gemma for their contributions and extend our best wishes with their venture abroad. Emma, with Gemma, has played a crucial part in strengthening the pathway between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTogether, they have directly impacted the development of many promising talents who have progressed into senior Lionesses,â he finished.
After succeeding Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has been integral to the promotion of a number of players to the England senior side, including midfielder Lucia Kendallâwho recently scored her debut Lionesses goalâand attackers Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
An extensive process for new U23 coaching staff is now underway, with the aim to continue the development of the youth national team in the coming years.
