Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.
"Yes, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor stated when asked about contemplating a White House bid post the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
The governor's current term as governor wraps up in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Newsom has emerged as a notable critic of the former president's team, leveraging his digital presence and pushing a proposition that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in response to GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from adversaries.
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a recent interview on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened suspending the authority to provide CDLs.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," Duffy declared, after a recent fatal crash in California involving an non-citizen trucker that led to three deaths and injured individuals.
His administration pointed out that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had earlier announced he was blocking $40m from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.
"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a previous statement responding to the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: California truck drivers had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."
A recent poll found that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom must consider running for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.
In previous months, the governor stated while on a trip several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He noted his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The thought that a person who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I await who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
