USDA officials declared on Saturday that monthly food benefits through a critical national social assistance programs will not be distributed next month amid the persistent government funding lapse.
The funding lapse was in three and a half weeks as officials revealed the news, coming after appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats asking the department to access emergency reserves to fund next month's benefits.
“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” the department confirmed. “Currently, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.
Tens of millions of people depend on these monthly payments, according to official statistics. Various areas, like one southwestern state, use of SNAP is as high as a significant portion of citizens.
A memo obtained by journalists indicated that the department decided against using contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.
Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree over how to finance and restart government operations.
Remarks from the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities indicated that the White House had opportunities to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.
“They had the ability and responsibility acted weeks ago to get ready to use these funds,” the remarks concluded. “Rather, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to influence Democratic senators to vote for a funding package that would reopen federal functions.
Governors in multiple regions issued emergency declarations in recent days to allocate funds to combat potential hunger expecting SNAP benefits not being issued next month.
