The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans right away after his victory in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the imperative to focusing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will forever remain inside me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

During his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

However his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment although he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his previous Astoria home.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
